Additional Information about the Itinerary

  1. The minimum number of days you need to stay in Nepal is one night before your trekking trip and two nights after your trekking trip. However, the way you plan your trip will also depend on the international flight you take to Nepal.
  2. Domestic flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are very often delayed or canceled, regardless of the season. This is because it is a visual mountain flight, and because it flies between high mountains, there is a risk of accidents on days with poor visibility or strong winds. In fact, there have been many accidents in the past.

Even if the weather in Kathmandu is good, you cannot fly if the weather conditions around Lukla Airport are not good, and vice versa. Regardless of the season, flight cancellations for 1-2 consecutive days are common.

In the past, the weather was bad from the end of October to mid-November, which is the best trekking season, and all flights on the Lukla route were canceled for a total of 12 days in just half a month. This affected many trekkers, including those who had to change their trekking course because they could not fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, and those who were at a loss because they could not return from Lukla to Kathmandu and missed their return flight.

This section is a piston operation, so if the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is not available, the flight from Lukla to Kathmandu will also not be available. There are also flights that fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, but get stuck in Lukla due to bad weather on the way back.
  3. During peak periods from October to mid-November and March to April, airlines are overbooked almost every day. There are no vacant seats every day. It would be great if the flight conditions continued to be good and flights went smoothly every day, but once the weather worsens and a flight is canceled, there are no vacant seats the next day and after, which causes a major disruption in schedules. Normally, when a flight is canceled, you can make a rebooking for a seat on the next day or later, but during peak periods, there are no vacant seats and it is difficult to make a rebooking. Even if you can make a rebooking, you can only get a late flight that is unlikely to fly no matter what, and you often end up not being able to fly.

Kathmandu Airport has problems such as a short runway and few parking spots, and there are daily takeoff and landing congestion for both international and domestic flights, but domestic flights in particular are often affected and delayed. It is common for flights to be made to wait for takeoff and landing for hours from the morning, even though the weather is good and there are no problems with flying, and when it is finally your turn to fly, the flight has been canceled due to bad weather in Lukla.

As such, if you are unable to fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, you can simply change your trekking route, but if you are unable to fly from Lukla to Kathmandu, you should plan your trip with full understanding that you run the risk of missing your flight home.
  4. There are two ways to travel other than regular domestic flights, and they have their advantages and disadvantages as follows.

A: If traveling by land: As of November 2020, the shortest route is as follows.
→ Travel by car between Kathmandu and Saleli, and 2 to 3 days on foot between Saleli and Lukla (The road is rough up to a certain point, but there is a road, and trucks for transporting goods travel back and forth irregularly, so if the timing is right, you can get a ride for a fee. Advance reservations are difficult, so you will have to arrange it locally.)

    * Previously, it took about 7 days via Jiri, but now it is faster to travel via Papul/Saleli than via Jiri.

    B: If traveling by helicopter:
→ If you make a regular arrangement, it will cost about US$6,500 between Kathmandu and Lukla, but if there are plans for a helicopter flight without passengers for transporting goods or arranging rescue, they may let you use it at a low price. Depending on the timing, you may be able to arrange such a helicopter, but you cannot arrange such a low-cost helicopter in advance. Also, helicopters cannot fly in bad weather, so it is best not to rely on them.
  5. To avoid panicking even if your flight to Lukla is canceled, it is a good idea to take the following two precautions in advance.

A: Plan with plenty of time! Leave at least two nights between the end of your trekking and your departure from Nepal.

B: Arrange an open ticket for your flight out of Nepal. Even if it is a little more expensive, it will be cheaper than buying a new ticket.

  8. Tips for guides and porters

Lodges during the trek

Lodges along the trek generally offer simple rooms with beds and shared toilets and showers, but there are also better-equipped lodges further along the Everest trail.

Lukla, Phakding, Monjo, Namche

Yeti Mountain Home

Syangboche

Everst Sherpa Resort

Pangboche

Everset Summit Lodge

It will cost an additional 200 USD per night, but if you are worried about staying in an unfamiliar lodge or would like to stay in a well-equipped location in the mountains, you can change lodges for an additional fee.

Expenses other than trekking

The above trekking fee does not include the hotel fee in Kathmandu. The accommodations we arrange are for intermediate level or above. Our opinion on hotels is posted on this page.

About Porter

For this course, if only one person is participating, it will be treated as a plan without a porter.

As a general rule, guides will not act as porters except in emergencies, so if you do not think you will be able to carry your luggage yourself, please request an additional porter.

In Nepal, every hotel offers a free baggage storage service for luggage that is not needed for trekking. If you leave unnecessary items at the hotel, many people go without a porter for trekking for about two nights. It is a bit tricky for three nights, though.

*If there are two or more people participating, a porter will accompany you, but please let us know if you do not need one.
