This area is full of tourist restaurants and hotels. It’s like a smaller version of Thamel in Kathmandu or Lakeside in Pokhara. You can walk to the Rapti River and go there to watch the sunset.

Even though it is a tourist town, it has a peaceful atmosphere, and in the mornings and evenings you can see safari elephants walking through the town on their way to work in the jungle.

Baghmara District

It is a new tourist town located 2-3 km away from the Sauraha district. It is also close to an elephant riding area, and at night, wild animals can sometimes be seen coming out of the jungle and walking along the road.

There are few restaurants, so if you want to eat outside the hotel, you have to go to the Sauraha area, which can be a little inconvenient. However, it is only a 20-minute walk one way.

Meghauli District

It is more than an hour’s drive from Sauraha and Baghmara. There are many luxury resort hotels built after the lodges were withdrawn from the national park in 2012.

The hotel is surrounded by rural fields and there are no restaurants, eateries or places to stroll around, so it is a place for those who want to relax within the hotel after checking in.

  operates between Kathmandu and Souraha Bus Park,
  departing Kathmandu at around 7:00 AM / departing Souraha at around 9:00 AM.
  Travel time: approximately 6 hours.
  
  Meghauli is in the opposite direction from Souraha Bus Park, so if you are going by tourist bus, it is common to consult with your hotel in advance, get off at a place designated by the hotel, and have the hotel pick you up there. Use a paid shuttle service.

Precautions when traveling by land

When traveling overland between Kathmandu (Pokhara) and Chitwan, there is a section called Mugling-Narayanghat, which is just under 40 km long.

The road was a cliff road with many curves, in poor condition and narrow width, and there were many accidents on the road, but large-scale road widening work has been carried out since February 2016.

The construction was almost completed in 2018, but the mountainside that had been cut down for the widening work often collapses when it rains, causing the road to be quickly closed.

For reference, we present footage of the widening work in progress in November 2017, and footage of a small landslide occurring when it rained in January 2020, even though it was the dry season.

Please keep this in mind when traveling by land and be careful.
